Top-rated independent heating and cooling across South Florida

Heat Pump Not Heating

We repair heat pumps that run but blow cool or lukewarm air, for homeowners across Florida. If your system is calling for heat and the rooms are not warming up, that is the job we handle. Before you call, check that the thermostat is set to heat and the batteries are good, look for a tripped breaker, change a loaded filter, and clear leaves or debris away from the outdoor unit. If it still will not heat, call us and describe what the air feels like at the vents.

What the repair involves

A heat pump heats by running the cooling cycle backwards, so a no-heat call is usually a failure somewhere in that reversal. We arrive, confirm what the thermostat is asking for, then watch the system through a full cycle at both the indoor and outdoor units. We measure temperature at the supply and return, check that the outdoor fan and compressor are behaving, and read the electrical side. From there we know whether the fault is control, airflow, refrigerant or a mechanical part, and we tell you which before any work starts.

What we check

We look at the reversing valve and the solenoid that shifts it, since a valve stuck in cooling is one of the most common causes of cold air in heat mode. We check the defrost board and sensor, the auxiliary or emergency heat strips and their sequencers, the thermostat wiring and staging, contactors, capacitors, and the blower. We also check refrigerant pressures, because a low charge from a leak leaves a heat pump running constantly without ever satisfying the thermostat. Salt air near the coast eats outdoor components, so we inspect for corrosion too.

How we decide it is the right call

If the outdoor unit runs and the indoor air is cool, that points at the reversing valve or the charge, and it is a repair worth making on most systems. If only the electric heat strips are carrying the house, your energy use climbs and the heat pump side needs attention. We weigh the age of the equipment, the condition of the coil and compressor, and whether a leak is repairable or spread through a corroded coil. Then we lay out repair versus replacement in plain terms and let you choose.

Heat Pump Not Heating — quick answers

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heat mode?

Most often the reversing valve is stuck in cooling, or the refrigerant charge is low from a leak. It can also be a thermostat wired or set wrong. All of those need a technician to confirm and correct.

Is it normal for the outdoor unit to steam?

Yes. A heat pump periodically runs a defrost cycle to shed frost from the outdoor coil, and the steam you see is that ice melting off. If it never stops or ice builds up thick, call us.

Should I use emergency heat until you arrive?

You can, and it will keep the house warm, but it runs on electric resistance heat and costs more to operate. Switch back once we have the heat pump working. Let us know you were running it.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a breaker that keeps tripping, water stains on the ceiling. That detail helps us bring the right parts.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, refrigerant performance, airflow and the condensate line. We find the actual cause instead of swapping parts and hoping the problem stays away.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

We explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and how long the part is likely to last. Nothing gets replaced until you say go, and we test the system before leaving.

Why homeowners call us

  • Built for the salt airCoastal Florida is hard on outdoor equipment. Coils corrode, contactors pit, fan motors seize early. We look for that damage during every air conditioning repair so a small failure does not take the whole system down.
  • Condensate lines we actually clearBy late summer, drain lines clog with algae and shut systems off on the float switch. We clear the line, check the pan and the safety switch, and show you what caused the backup.
  • Heating tooCold snaps still arrive. We do heating repair and heater repair on heat pumps, strip heat and furnace repair where homes have one, so the system works in January as well as August.
  • Plain talk about older systemsIf a repair makes sense, we repair it. If a unit is failing in ways that will keep costing you, we say that too and lay out the options. You decide, not us.
  • All major brands, gas & electricEvery major HVAC brand, gas and electric, handled by an independent crew.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
